Panopticon - Coming soon November 2009 A collaboration by Leyla Rees and Scarlet Winter. Running time:15 minutes Number of performers: 1
A looming octagonal watch tower-like structure comprised from framed glass panes, mirrors and canvases stood tall dominating its expectant audience. Shadows projected onto the canvas’ suggested an internal performance, luring the audience to look inside, to see fragments of a performing aerialist bathed sporadically in spotlights. Negotiating the structure to see more, they too became part of the performance.
Blurring performance and art boundaries, ‘Panopticon’ explores themes of stage, power, desire and intimate spectacle. Evoking Foucaultian themes of imprisonment and the docile body, ‘Panopticon’ challenges the traditional passive role of the audience, conditioning and seducing the viewer into forced participation.
